Sydney University Wind Orchestra is proud to announce our semester two major concert- Aurora Awakes.

This November SUWO celebrates its 10th anniversary by taking band and audience alike on a journey, exploring the musical themes of light and colour. The concert’s titular piece- Aurora Awakes by John Mackey is an inspiring work invoking the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora- heralding of the coming of light. Exhilarating and challenging it evokes imagery of vibrant flashes of light. From a place of remarkable stillness to an unbridled explosion of energy — from darkness to light, placid grey to startling rainbows of colour.

The concert will also feature a wide variety of music including John Mackey’s exuberant march Xerxes, Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, Charles R.Young’s Tempered Steel, Percy Grainger’s Children’s March and by popular demand John Williams’ Star Wars, arranged by our very own Musical Director Steven Capaldo.

THE BAND

10 years ago the Sydney University Wind Orchestra was founded as a place for the university community to share their passion for music. Fun and social everyone was welcome and one of the University of Sydney Union's great clubs was born.

Today we're proud to continue this tradition. The band has developed tremendously over the intervening years to where we are today- One of Sydney's formost community music ensembles. SUWO is filled with passionate musicians making incredible music- and having a great time doing so!

Under the musical direction of Dr Steven Capaldo , with over 70 playing members and a full compliment of symphonic band instruments we are able to perform some of the most exciting wind band music available. Across two major concerts, a chamber music concert and series of concerts for primary school children- SUWO is able to share the joy of music throughout Sydney.
